HEAVY-WEIGHT FIGHT
“Queerest In History”
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, May 7. The Australian heavyweight title fight in Wellington last Monday would go down in the record books “as one of the queerest in history.” the "Sunday Telegraph” boxing columnist Keith Robbins, said in today's edition.
“For the first time in history a weight limit was put on a heavy-weight title fight," he said.
In the bout, the Australian. Clive Stewart, lost on points to George Mahoni, after 15 rounds. Robbins said: “Stewart’S trainer, E. McQuillan, agreed to the contest only if Mahoni signed a contract for 12st 81b limit at a £25 forfeit." Mahon-i agreed and weighed in at 13st, forfeiting the £25. “In the eleventh round Stewart knocked Mahoni out of the ring. "The referee refused to count, although Mahoni was outside the ring for an estimated 12 seconds.
Robbins went on: “The referee said under New Zealand rules a boxer had 30 seconds to re-enter the ring if knocked out of it You can just imagine how red McQuillan’s face was when the referee made his statement
