DRAINAGE IN WAIMAIRI
Labour Branch’s Statement
“On behalf of the North Papanui-Styx branch of the Labour Party, and as a Waimairi county councillor, I must express grave concern that the future progress and development of a large area of north Papanui will be seriously retarded by the policy of the present Government in not making moneys available to allow urgent drainage board work to proceed as planned,” says a statement by Mr A. A. Adcock. “Apparently the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) is unperturbed that 75 men now engaged on drainage board work may be lost to this vital work within the next 10 weeks. This situation must cause anxiety to all in the north Papanui. Northcote, and Styx areas who at present face a grave risk to health because of the present sullage disposal difficulties in these areas. “Many owning building sections and business people who have purchased businesses in anticipation of future development will face financial hardship because of the necessity to restrict further residential building in these areas. “It is doubtful whether the Government's action of increasing interest rates on local body loans will result in more moneys being available to the drainage board. It will tend to increase the already high cost of drainage work,” says the statement.
