FORECASTING PRICES

New Zealand should have a price forecasting bureau for the benefit of fanners in planning future production. Mr H. E. Garrett, reader in farm management at Canterbury Agricultural College. told members of the Lauriston Farm Improvement Club this week. Discussing the need for such an organisation, Mr Garrett said the present high prices for beef were contingent upon the United States market. His “guess” was that beef “might fade a bit” in the next 12 months and lambs might be a shade weaker next year. Wool marketing was tied very closely to economic conditions. Canada and the United States had very high unemployment but Eastern interests had exerted a strong influence on the market recently. “I would feel that wool will be about the same next year—quietly payable,” he said.
