The Division of Plant Industry invites application for two positions at its Regional Pastoral Laboratory at Deniliquin, N.S.W., where research into the management and utilisation of dryland and irrigated pastures is being expanded. The Regional Laboratory has excellent facilities for laboratory and field research including well equipped laboratories, glasshouses, growth room and library. There is a field station of 7500 acres including 300 acres under irrigation on which a wide range of experimental work is being conducted. The Deniliquin Laboratory has strong links with the headquarters of the Division in Canberra, A.C.T., which is engaged in research in many fields of plant production and biology, including agronomy, ecology, microclimatology, plant nutrition, genetics, physiology and biochemistry. The Division, which has a total professional staff of 140, also has other regional laboratories and field stations in other parts of Australia whose staff welcome collaborative work. Deniliquin, N.S.W., has a population of 6000, is 180 miles from Melbourne. Vic., and is served by air. rail and bus services. Secondary education is available. Applicants for the following positions should have at least a University Honours degree in Science or Agriculture with some years of relevant postgraduate research experience. RESEARCH OFFICER OR SENIOR RESEARCH OFFICER PASTURE UTILISATION (POSITION No. 130/103) The appointee will be required to conduct research into the principles of management and utilisation of irrigated and dryland pastures with particular emphasis on the integration of summer and winter pasture species for animal production. Current studies of the season productivity of endemic and introduced species will provide a basis for the work proposed. Applicants should have a background in ecology or agrostology. Experience in animal husbandry is desirable but not essential. RESEARCH OFFICER OR SENIOR RESEARCH OFFICER. SOIL FERTILITY (POSITION No. 130/100) The appointee will be required to study the role of organic matter in soil fertility changes under grazed pastures, particularly as it affects nutrient availability. As soils with a wide range in texture and nutrient status are being studied for agricultural and pastoral use with and without irrigation an important aspect of the work will be the development of methods of assessing soil fertility both in the glasshouse and laboratory. Applicants should have a background in soil chemistry. Dependent upon qualifications and experience commencing salaries will be determined within the salary range of Research Officer £AISIO-£A2285 p.a., or Senior Research Officer £A2395-XA2750 p.a. Salary for women will be £AIBO p.a. less than the corresponding rates for men. Promotion within C.5.1.R.0. is by merit and may ultimately go beyond the upper limit of scale within which the original appointment is made. The appointments will be conditional upon a satisfactory medical examination and an initial probationary period of up to twelve months may also be specified. Confirmation of appointment carries , with it Commonwealth Superannuation Fund or Commonwealth Provident Account privileges. By arrangement with the appointee, the appointment may be for an indefinite period, or for a fixed term of three or five years. In the case of a person appointed for a fixed term, return fares will also be paid by the Organisation at the end of the agreed period.
