TROTTING SCHNAPPS IN LINE FOR WIN
Main Sprint Event At Forbury Park
Schnapps, an unlucky fourth in a head-and-head finish to the Farewell Handicap last Saturday, is selected to make amends with a win in the Farewell Handicap tonight. This race is the main sprint event on the final day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting.
Schnapps was never very far from the lead in his race last week, but was late obtaining a clear run. He finished with a great burst in the straight and was doing as well as any of his rivals. His recent form has been of a high standard andheshouldjust about win.
Erin’s Castle was almost knocked down at the start of the Flying Handicap last Saturday and his penalty of 12 yards for winning might not be enough to keep him out of the finish once again. He is obviously well above average in ability and will require only a reasonable run to be the hardest for Schnapps to beat in what looks to be a reasonably open field. Zany, too, overcame difficulties in the Flying Handicap last Saturday when she finished third to Erin’s Castle and Bonnie Lustre. The pace was solid all the way last week and that appeared to suit Zany. If the race is run in a similar manner tonight, she will take beating. She will again be bracketed with Gildirect, a capable but disappointing pacer lately. Bonnie Lustre showed something of her true form when she finished boldly from an awkward position for second to Erin's Castle last Saturday. She is usually reliable and should again be a sound place prospect. Raven Dew was responsible for a fast pace over the first nine furlongs of last week’s sprint. He tired a little over the last furlong to finish fifth. If he receives a trail instead of being left in front, he could upset calculations. Raven Dew looks very well at present. Waitaki Child and Bespoke will form a useful bracket for their trainer, W. R. Butt. Waitaki Child was fourth in the main race last Saturday, while Bespoke tired badly after being handy to the straight in the sprint. Both could be prominent Aquaplane, Peebles, Zenith and Highland Heath are others capable of taking a prominent part in . the finish.
Second Last Week Our Jimmy was a little unlucky last week to strike Tarseal in one of his more generous moods and he was well beaten in second place in the Dunedin Handicap. However, he was unchallenged for second place, and should go one better in the Railway Handicap tonight. Our Jimmy is racing most generously at present and he is due for another win. Glenfern did not start on the first night, but is certain to be among the favourites. He has had three wins and five second placings from eight starts this season and is regarded as one of the best trotting prospects in Southland. He looks better placed on 24 yards in this field than he has been for some time and he should earn some of the stake. Tarseal will start from 60 yards this week, 12 yards more than when he won last Saturday. His performance last week was full of merit and he won with a lot in hand. He could easily repeat that effort, but is pot noted for consistency. Ahumai trotted a useful race for sixth last week after losing her position in the middle stages of the race. She will be bracketed with Gunner, a speedy but unreliable trotter. Flying Paddy was a winner in a slower class last Saturday. The Flying Song four-year-old could be a threat in this field in which he will be bracketed with Dark Lorene. The latter was solidly supported on the first night of the meeting, but could not keep up early and was not a danger. Catapult, a place-getter on the first night. Superway and Procrastinator are other’
prospects in what should be an interesting race. The double will be run on the Queen’s Handicap and the Pacific Handicap, Zany and Meadow Scott forming a likely combination. A few light showers are forecast for today, but unless there is heavy rain, the track should be fast.
