ARBITRATION PRINCIPLE
F.O.L Change Of View
(IV Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 5. The annual conference of the Federation of Labour today agreed not to reaffirm its previously adopted principle of compulsory conciliation and arbitration, which included its present attitude to the Arbitration Court, and to refer the issue to the incoming national executive for action. The FOL. president (Mr F. P. Walsh) said tonight that the decision had been unanimous. It was one of several recommendations adopted in a committee report presented by the convener, Mr L. A Hadley. Mr Walsh said the recommendation grouped two remits from the Otago Boilermakers’ Union and the Northern Drivers’ Union and read: •'That having regard to the present Government’s decision to abolish compulsory unionism and its refusal to enforce the law thereon that has been in operation and enforced by all previous Governments for the last 25 years, it be recommended as follows: That the conference not reaffirm its previously adopted principle of compulsory conciliation and arbitration (which Includes its present attitude to the Arbitration Court) and that this whole subject be referred to the incoming national executive to deal with, having rega-d to the legislation the Government proposes to introduce on the abolition of compulsory unionism, and industrial matters generally.”
