ABDUCTION CHARGE
Youth Found Guiltv
<N.Z Press Association) PALMERSTON N„ May 5. After a retirement of two hours, a jury in the Supreme Court at Palmerston North today found Vaughan Thomas Nelson Lane, aged 19. guilty on a charge of abducting an unmarried girl under the age of 18, with intent to cause her to be carnally known, but acquitted him on another charge of abducting the girl with intent to carnally know her himself. Mr Justice Leicester remanded Lane for sentence. The Crown Prosecutor was Mr J. A. Ongley and Lane was represented by Mr T. A. de Cleene. No evidence was called for the defence, and Mr Ongley did not address the jury. Mr de Cleene said the charges brought against Lane were the first of their kind in the history of New Zealand law. The jury had been asked to convisct a man on the evidence of a most immoral girl, said Mr de Cleene. His Honour said that the purpose of the section of the Crimes Act under which the charges were laid was to protect girls under 18. even if they suggested or agreed to an immoral proposition
