£lOOO Damages For Libel
(N Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) SYDNEY. May 5 A jury tonight awarded £lOOO damages to Dr. Michael Bialoguski in a New South Wales Supreme Court libel action. Dr. Bialoguski, a former Australian intelligence agent, was a witness at the Royal Commission into Espionage after Vladimir Petrov defected from the Soviet Embassy in Canberra in May, 1954. He claimed damages against Consolidated Press. Ltd., publishers of the “Daily Telegraph" and the “Sunday Telegraph." and David McNicoll. its editor-in-chief. He alleged that articles appearing in these newspapers in June, 1955, purportedly written by his former wife, Agnes Patricia, contained malicious and damaging libel. After the 14 day hearing the jury considered its verdict for three hours and a half before returning a finding in favour of Dr. Bialoguski on 11 out of 12 counts.
