Pit Stops
! Greatest activity among j motor clubs in Canterbury jin the next few months I will be devoted to rallies | and trials, which thrust I speed events into the backI ground during winter. The jnumber of rallies orgajnised in this province is j very large, and although ! the fields are still relaI tively small compared | with events in the North j Island, the band of | enthusiasts is slowly growjing. ? There is a very projnounced swing away from j the tough car-smashing | type of event which was I once in vogue. Cars cost iso much today and are so shard to replace that few] lean afford to drive theiri | car over rough terrain and j stand the expense of I I repairs at the end. Thisj | type of event and the acjoompanying publicity has ! made the public very scep|tical of being connected i with rallies, and it is only I now that the organisers | are beginning to reap the benefit of their change of s heart. ! Many rallies today conj sist solely of a navigational | test and an opportunity for la driver to show his road | manners and ability at j handling his vehicle. ForI tunately, the car-wrecking | type of event is dying a i natural death, although (there are still one or two I stalwarts who revel in the I tougher going. ★ i Planning has been completed for the Westland Motor Club’s 11-hour Westland championship gold star rally on May 13. This is an open event, and has been organised by the club secretary (Mr ' !•. Hopkins), the president! (Mr H. S. Howat), and i Messrs V. Allan and B.| Neame. Mr G. Dawson i will be secretary of the I meeting. The first car! will start from West} Coast Motors, Greymouth, j at 11 a.m., and others will! follow at three-minute in-j tervals.
’ The Canterbury Car ' Club held its annual T. V. ’ Myers trial last week-end, . and the event was notable . for the number of ex- : perienced competitors who ■ got lost Last year’s win--5 ner, L. Hayes (Ford) went off route on the first sec1 tion and he seemed to set i a trend. The winner was t N. G. Ryde (TR3 A), who lost only 22 points over . the 200-mile route. B. B, i Hepburn (Jaguar Mk. VTI) ; was in second place with i 28 points lost and L. Mat jendie (Vanguard), 37, , was third.
