UNIVERSITY DEGREES CONFERRED
“This ceremony has some historical significance, as it will probably be the last at (which degrees of the Unijversity of New Zealand will :be publicly conferred at 'Canterbury,” said the Chancellor of the University of New Zealand (Sir David Smith) at the Canterbury University graduation ceremony in the Civic Theatre yesterday afternoon. With Sir David Smith on ,the stage were the Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Mr C. H. Perkins), |the Vice-Chancellor (Dr. L. |L Pownall), deans of faclulties, members of the New * Zealand University Senate hnd the Canterbury University Council* and staff, and i official guests. i In the auditorium sat 386 igraduands. and the rest of I the theatre was filled by their relatives and friends. Because of record numbers of graduands, yesterday’s ceremony differed from that of previous years in that graduands went to the stage in groups of five instead of singly. Another innovation was that diplomas were not presented: they will be posted this year. Headed by the Esquire Bedell carrying the mace, graduands. university staff, and official guests moved in a procession along Worcester street from the university to the Civic Theatre outside which a large crowd had gathered.
