THE PAPER-BARKED MAPLE.—One of the lesserknown members of a well-known group is Acer griseum, the paper-barked maple. It is aptly named, for the attractive brown bark sloughs off each year in a whole series of papery scales, exposing the fresh brown bark beneath. The paper-barked maple makes a small, open, tree about 12ft high, and if it is carefully placed against an evergreen background in a spot where the sun can shine on the stem, it will make one of the lesser, but nevertheless attractive autumn features in the garden.
