“BEN HUR” PREMIERE
Decorations In Theatre
Banks of flowers in bronze, gold and white, massed potted plants and foliage bedecked the State Theatre for the South island premiere of "Ben Hur” last evening. It was a gracious setting for the rich brocades, satins and gay floral cottons of the evening frocks worn with elegant furs by women guests. A feature of the decorations was a fine reproduction of an old Italian painting of the chariot race at the Colosseum in Rome. The vivid colours of the picture and minute details have been carefully preserved by the artist who copied the original. The reproduction is framed in a tapestry surround. The picture has been lent by Mr M. P. Dunn, of Christchurch, who served in Italy with the First New Zealand General Hospital in the Second World War. It was given to him by an -Italian family in gratitude for assistance he gave to members of the family who had been badly injured during hostiliI ties.
