YONKERS PACE

False Step Supported

/N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 4. The American pacer Bye Bye Byrd is a 2-1 favourite to win the 50,000-dollar International Pace at Yonkers Raceway, New York, tonight and so become the first harness horse in American racing history to earn 500,000 dollars. Four pacers from New Zealand and Australia will challenge Bye Bye Bird, which is the all-time moneywinning champion of the U.S. sulky world. The New Zealand horse, False Step, is the second choice at 3-1 and Mr Budlong, which has won four of five starts this year, is the third choice at 9-2. The Australian horse, Apmat, a 12-1 shot, and Arania, of New Zealand, a 15-1 outsider, are the others of the foreign entries in the eight-horse field. Another “foreigner” in the race is the New Zealand pacer. Caduceus. now leased to an American syndicate Caduceus is quoted at 8-1 Other starters and their odds are Tar Boy, 6-1, and O'Brien Hanover. 15-1. First of Three

The International Pace, over a mile and a half for a total prize money of 50.000 dollars, is the first of three races in the international pacing series at Yonkers this month. Devine’s handling of False Step in track work has so impressed harness racing observers that he is being credited with enough “go” to overcome the disadvantage of starting wide out at No ; 5. Yonkers Raceway uses a mobile starting gate mounted on a moving car to give its fields flying starts. The disadvantage of a wide-out starting position is increased by the size of American sulkies which are at least 18in wider than Australian and New Zealand sulkies. The International Pace is timed to begin about 10 p.m. '2 a.m. G.M.T, May s>.
