S.A. WOOL INDUSTRY
“Brink Of Bankruptcy”
(N .2 JP.A .-Reuter—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, May 3. The South African wool washing and combing industry was on the brink of bankruptcy as a result of the Sharpeville shooting, Senator G. Paul told the Senate. He said that before Sharpeville, Russia and Communist China had bought 65.000 bales of South African wool between them; but after Sharpeville they had withdrawn completely from the market, said British United Press. Communist China in particular had been a big buyer of washed and combed wool. He urged the Government to do everything possible to maintain friendly relations with countries normally friendly towards South Africa in order to help the wool market The Minister of Agriculture, Economics and Marketing, Mr D. C. Huys, said he regretted the loss of the Russian and Chinese markets, but said South Africa could not comply with the demands of every country in return for the sales of its product*.
