SONG WRITER IN CITY

Compositions Accepted

News that three of her songs had been accepted for publication came as a surprise to Mrs L. Taylor, a Christchurch housewife and mother of nine children. “It all happened so suddenly—overnight, in fact,” she said. “I could hardly believe my eyes when I opened the letter and saw I'd been offered three contracts. One of the songs has sold out one edition, and the other two will be on sale shortly." At present Mrs Taylor is composing another four songs for the publishers. "Ever since I was a young girl at school I have wanted to write songs. Music was continually running through my brain, but marriage and a growing family left me little time for serious writing,” she said yesterday. "The family are my sharpest critics. If they like a song, they ask to hear it again, but if they don’t I know it’s not up to standard,” she said. Mrs Taylor was given the contracts after a cousin had shown an Amertcan publisher some of her manuscripts. The publisher asked to see a selection, so Mrs Taylor sent what she considered to be her best songs away to Hollywood. Freedom can win only in light, candur, logic and truth.—Thomas J. Dodd.
