TELEVISION TONIGHT
First From Channel 3
A television programme will be broadcast in Christchurch this evening. The regional engineer of the New Zealand Broadcasting Service (Mr R. G. Tulloch) told this to a group of amateur radio operators at the Christchurch television studio at 3YA, last evening. The programme will last from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. It will be the first time that Channel 3, the Christchurch station, has broadcast. The broadcast is purely experimental and not intended for entertainment. It is expected that some films will be shown. The type of transmission is called telecine. The radio operators at the studio last evening were about 60 members of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Association of Radio Transmitters. The branch has about 150 members. The group was split into four smaller groups and they were shown over the studio and transmitter. Mr Tulloch said that the staff of Channel 3 would be glad to hear from members of the N.Z.A.R.T. on the reception of the programme—especially from those some distance away.
