Shipment Held In U.S.
throm (Jut Own Keporter / WELLINGTON, May 4 Quantities of boneless beef from New Zealand are being held by the United States Department of Agriculture because it appears to be contaminated by chemicals. In cables to the Department of Agriculture earlier this week, the American authorities said that traces of benzene hexachloride had been found during routine tests, and that tests were being continued The Minister oi Agriculture (Mr Hayman) said tonight an urgent investigation had begun in New Zealand The chemical found on the meat was probably a residue of fiyspray used in freezing works Scientists and meat inspectors have begun an intensive study of similar meat samples. Samples from current production have been collected and are being analysed at the animal research station at Wallaceville. Mr D L. Harrison, a scientific officer specialising in this work, is engaged on the tests, which are expected to be completed in three or four days
