Eight Blood Exchanges

(N.Z Press Association) PALMERSTON N., May 4. Eight complete blood exchanges—believed to be the greatest number of exchange transfusions performed on a child with rhesus incompatibility—were successfully carried out last week in the Palmerston North Hospital. The two previous children of this family had died, one at birth and one on the third day of life, from the destruction of blood cells associated with having a rhesus blood group incompatible with thai of the mother. It was predicted that this baby would be severely affected and appropriate steps were taken in advance to treat the child immediately after birth.

The baby, which was premature, had its blood exchanged with that of a compatible donor within an hour of birth. However, its subsequent condition was such that seven further exchanges were needed during the next four days.
