Sportsman’s Notebook DEMONSTRATION OF NEW LIFE-SAVING DRILL

So that next season's competition will not be held up unnecessarily, a detailed demonstration of the new drill, as adopted at the recent surf life-saving instructional conference at Adelaide, for the mouth-to-mouth method of resuscitation is to be given to local surfers on Sunday morning. May 14, at South Brighton beach. Since the expired air method of resuscitation, commonly known as the mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-nose method, was approved by the New Zealand Surf Life-saving Association more than a year ago. no points have been allotted by judges for the resuscitation drill in any surf carnivals held in the Dominion, including provincial, national, and international contests. During last season, competitors in both six-man rescue and resuscitation events and four-man alarm events were not judged on the resuscitation section, although they had to go through the motions of the new method. This was a pity, as the points usually allotted for resuscitation drill can make all the difference to the outcome of the contests. However, it was unavoidable. When the New Zealand association decided to adopt the expired air resuscitation, in common with all other life-saving and water safety bodies. It did not have either the time or the information required to formulate a definite drill pattern before the 1960-61 season. Consultation was also required with the Australian surfing authorities before any decision could be reached. An agreement between both New Zealand and Australian surf officials was reached at the recent instructional conference, and it is important for the future of the sport in Canterbury that competitors attend the demonstration. The demonstration will be given by a team from the South Brighton Club, directed by the Canterbury association's chief instructor (Mr A. Lee), who attended the conference as a delegate. » ♦ $ Inter-Club Squash Matches in the Christchurch squash rackets interclub competitions will again be played every second week. The Junior Chamber has dropped out of the A grade and is replaced by Lincoln, which has an A grade team for the first time.
