HARBOUR BOARD POSITION

Mr E. J. Bycroft Appointed

Mr E. J. Bycroft, at present civil administration officer of the Army Department in Christchurch, was appointed by the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday as its administration and industrial officer. Mr Bycroft will take the place of Mr A. E. Benzie, who died several months ago. The board appointed Mr D. J. Crocker, at present the board's senior pay clerk, as assistant industrial officer. Mr Bycroft has spent 31 years in the Public Service. He joined the service as a junior in the Navy Office, Wellington, and spent eight

years in the Navy Office before transferring to the Army. During the Second World War he was paymaster for the Southern Military District, with the rank of captain. Mr Bycroft wsrs returning officer for the Sydenham electorate for several General Elections; and in recent years has taken a keen interest in politics, serving as a member of the Christchurch Labour Representation Committee until last week. He has been secretary of the Christchurch Forensic Club for several years.
