ORAL POLIO VACCINE

Use “Adequately Tested”

(N.Z. Prest Association) DUNEDIN, May 3. Describing the oral poliomyelitis vaccine that the Department of Health proposes using for babies, as "an excellent vaccine,” Professor J. A. R. Miles, head of the department of microbiology. University of Otago Medical School, said the oral vaccine had been used on 70,000 people without ill effects. “It can, therefore, be regarded as having been adequately tested.” Professor Miles continued. "The oral vaccine is more effective, if anything, than the one given by injection.” However, it would still be necessary for the child to be given either two or three doses of vaccine.
