VISIT OF JOE LOUS
May Appear On June 28
The former world professional heavy-weight boxing champion. Joe Louis, may appear in Christchurch on June 28, either under private promotion or under the promotion of the Canterbury Boxing Association. Last evening the annual meeting of the association discussed plans for his visit. Mr E. Pocock, the president, said he had been approached by Mr J. J. Howard, of Auckland, who was organising Louis’s tour of the Dominion»next month. The Canterbury association had been offered an appearance by Louis and his vaudeville troupe, but no arrangements had been completed. In answer to a question from a member, Mr Pocock said that there was no bar to amateur boxers appearing on the same programme as Louis. All that was stipulated under the rules was that Louis, as a professional boxer, would not be permitted to judge or referee amateur bouts. It was thought that Louis would bring a sparring partner with him to the Dominion, together with members of his television vaudeville show. Members seemed inclined to let Mr Howard himself promote the show in Christchurch, but offered every assistance. A final decision will be made by the committee when more particulars are received.
