ASSISTANT STEWARDS
Instruction At Ellerslie
(W.2. Press AssocUittonJ AUCKLAND, May 3. Twenty selected candidates for appointment as assistant stipendiary stewards are today and tomorrow being instructed at the Ellerslie racecourse in racing organisation and administration. "The appointments will be the first in racing history and should create a greater efficiency in the control and administration of racing,” said Mr A. Mcßeath. secretary of the New Zealand Racing Conference, today. Not all the 20 will be appointed. They are representative of the Auckland and Waikato areas. “The number of appointments will be determined at an executive meeting, probably in June or July,” said Mr Mcßeath. “The syllabus arranged for the applicants takes in addresses on racing organisation and administration, raeeday procedure, gear, race reading, interference, swabbing of horses, and the general conduct of inquiries. “When the final selection is made the assistant stipendiary stewards will be under the direct control of the permanent panel of stipendiaries,” said Mr McBeath. “They will begin their duties after August 1, and their main duties will be to assist the senior men.” New Appointment There was every likelihood that the executive of the Racing Conference would appoint a riding master for the North Island at the end of the present racing season. The riding master would be required to attend the various training centres in the Auckland and Waikato districts where he would ride work with apprentices and instruct the boys in general riding principles. He would also attend race meetings and pay particular attention to the riding of the apprentices. “M we find a riding master a success in the North, then no doubt we will appoint one in the South Island," said Mr Mcßeath.
