COMPULSORY UNIONISM

F.O.L. Debate Today

(N Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 3. The first item on tomorrow morning’s agenda of the Federation of Labour’s annual conference was expected to produce a heated discussion, Mr F. P. Walsh, the F.O.L. president, said tonight. The item is that part of the annual report dealing with compulsory unionism. Some delegates are expected to accuse the national executive of not taking a strong enough line to combat Government moves for the abolition of compulsion, a few—the militants—are likely to accept voluntary unionism as “a shot in the arm”—but, over-all, the policy is likely to be endorsed. Mr Walsh said he hoped to extend an invitation to the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) to be present during the discussion. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash) has been invited to address the conference in the afternoon.
