VACANT LAND INSPECTED
Mr L C. Walker’s Plans For City Vacant land in and around Christchurch was inspected by a party during a tour yesterday organised by Mr L. C. Walker, who explained his ideas for the city’s expansion at several points along the route. Included in the party were six members of ParliamentMiss M. B. Howard. Mr H. J. Walker, Mr J. Mathison. Mr R. M. Macfarlane, Mr M. A. Connelly, Mr N. E. Kirk—the president of the Lyttelton Waterside Workers’ Union (Mr E. Threadwell), a representative of the Sydenham Friendly Club (Mr F. M. Beckett), Mr L. Brown and Mr A. G. M. Parfitt, representing a firm manufacturing building materials, and the supervisor of the Housing Division of the Ministry of Works in Christchurch (Mr H. S. Sherbrooke. Mr Walker’s plans included the construction of housing areas in the vacant areas in Hornby, Sockburn, and Rolleston, and the linking of the district with an electric railway. At the meeting place at the corner of Hazeldean road and Montreal street Mr Walker said: “If you are going to have an electric railway in Christchurch this place is very important. It is the most heavily industrialised I area of the city.” At one of the halts, in middle Lincoln jroad, Mr Walker said that 1000 houses could be built for elderly persons. Some of the land at present belongs to Sunnyside Hospital and some to the Church of England. Mr Walker said that the jet boats invented by the Christchurch engineer, Mr C. W. F. Hamilton, could be used to harvest seaweed. “Jt could make all the difference to New Zealand," Mr Walker said. Sixty thousand acres of land eould be reclaimed from Lake Ellesmere, Mr Walker said. The land in the middle Lincoln road district used for the housing scheme could be surrounded by 100 to 200 acres of farms, he said. Wellington, Auckland and Dunedin all lacked the room for expansion Christchurch had. he said. Mr Walker showed the party vacant factory lots in the Hornby area and land which could be settled around Rolleston. The party returned on the west side of the railway line and came through Templeton and Islington.
