TRICYCLE RACE

Students Ride Through City Amidat ebeers and encouragement from passers-by about 10 students from the University of Canterbury held a tricycle race through Christchurch about 4.30 p.m. yesterday. The event was part of a publicity campaign for the students’ capping collection today. The competitor* were dressed in various unusual ways. One wore tails, dress shirt and swimming shorts; another waa dressed as a baby. The route was up Hereford street from the University, along Colombo street into the Square, around the Square and back to the University down Worcester street. When the competitors reached the Square there were differing opinions as to where to go next. One student deviated into Gloucester street and arrived at the finish dragging Ms vehicle on the end of a scarf. A number of other mishaps occurred during the race. One student's tricycle got out of control and tipped him into the gutter. Others found the trip so exhausting that they had to rest, lying in front at the Cathedral. There were no official winners but a number of competitors claimed to be the first over the non-existent finishing line. The next event in the students’ publicity campaign will be a tiddlywink* “marathon" around the Cathedral about 9 a m. this morning.
