PREPARING FOR TOUR

Two Gatherings Proposed Preparation for the forth, coming New Zealand cricket tour of South Africa would possibly take the form of two week-end gatherings of team members in Christchurch and Wellington. Mr J. G. Leggat, convenor of the New Zealand Cricket Council’s selection panel and manager of the team, said yesterday. At the gatherings, he said, it was hoped to carry out a programme of physical education under a qualified instructor. talks on the laws of the game by a leading umpire, the playing of squash and the holding of indoor practice.

It was probable that playing conditions in South Africa would be discussed as well, with the captain. J. R. Reid, and the vice-captain, M. E. Chapple, giving teammates the benefits of their 1953-54 tour experience. Mr Leggat emphasised that the form the gatherings would take was still in the planning stages. No dates had yet been fixed for the gatherings but one could be held in July and the other in August or September. Mr Leggat proposes communicating with the players about the proposal soon.
