FIRE DESTROYS HOUSE
Red Cross Giving Assistance A four-roomed cottage at 102 Mackworth street, Woo’.ston, was destroyed by a fire which broke out about 1.50 a.m. yesterday. Units from . the Central and Woolston fire stations attended after a call had been received shortly after 2 am. The property belongs to Mr D. W. Widdowson, who was staying with relations while his wife was in a maternity home. Almost all the family's belongings were destroyed. The cause of the fire is not yet known. The president of the North Canterbury Centre of the Red Cross Society (Mrs R. I. Brake) said last evening that she had rung Mrs Widdow. son at the nursing home and told her that the society would help by supplying baby clothing and household linen. Mr and Mrs Widdowson have a son aged two, as well as a daughter who was born six days ago.
