SAMOAN POLL
Independence Issue (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) APIA. May 2. The people of Western S-amoa will go to the polls ito decide whether their country shall be independent. The returning officer (Mr B. L. Clare) has set up 150 polling booths on the islands of Upolu and Savaii at which citizens will cast their votes.
Following in the footsteps of the returning officer are the United Nations observers headed by Dr. N. Rafai. the specially appointed United Nations commissioner for the plebiscite. The Prime Minister of Western Samoa (the Hon. Fiame) has made a radio address in which he appealed to the population to vote “yes" but there has so far been little public display either for or against the issue.
On the island of Savaii. which was hard hit in the recent storm, there appears to be more immediate concern with repairing the damage. There is also some doubt as to how an independent Samoa will fare in the future in the event of similar or perhaps worse natural disasters. It is expected, however, that interest will quicken as voting day draws nearer.
