ADDINGTON MARKET Medium-Weight Lambs In Sound Demand
Good light to medium fat lambs were dearer by Is to 2s a head at Addington market yesterday under competition from freezing interests. Shorn lambs and medium to heavy woody lambs showed little alteration from late rates.
In the fat sheep section, top woolled ewes were dearer by fully 2s, but other classes were only on a par to a shade better. In the fat wether section the emphasis was on the best younger sorts. These held to late rates, but older and plainer lines were easier. Though still meeting a reasonably good sale, fat cattle tended to be easier. Steers were up to 50s down, heifers were slightly easier, and cows were from par to easier. In the fat pig section the yarding of porkers was the largest for years, and though up to 10s and more easier they were considered to have sold reasonably well taking into account the heavy supply. FAT LAMBS
The fat lamb entry totalled 3733 compared with 2211 last week. Quality was quite good, although there was a scarcity of the big heavy lambs which have been the dominant feature of the market In the last few months.
The market opened on a firm note, and in the early stages there were not many lambs penned. However, late arrivals swelled the numbers and the sale again went on until well after midday. There was keen competition for the good' light to medium lambs from freezing interests, and this class appreciated by la to 2s a head. There was little grazier inquiry in the face of the Unproved competition. Shorn lambs sold well and these and medium to heavy woolly sorts were fully firm on last week’s good rates. The market was topped by E. L. Weaver (Christchurch) with two at 70s Id. and the same price was gained by J. Egan (Waiau) with one. G. D. Berry (Hari Harl) received 68s 7d for eight, and sales at 68s Id were made by W Withell and Son (Ashburton) and F. A. Parament (Whataroa). V. A. Berry (Harl Harl) sold 14 at 67s Id. For shorn lambs the top price was 62s Id. which was paid for the tope of a line of 50 from A. C Wright (Dunsandel), which made from 58s Id and averaged 60s 6d. An unnamed vendor also had a sale at 62s Id and sales at 59s Id were made by M. Ryan (Springston) and P. Brown (Whitecliff s). Values were:— Best butchers' lambs. 66s 7d to 70s Id. FAT SHEEP The fat sheep entry was bigger than last week and totalled 2636 head compared with 2199 last week. ' Quality was about the same, and there was a good proportion of top wethers.
The best of the younger wethers held to late rates and sold soundly, but for older sorts and plainer lines the market was definitely slacker and values sagged. The trade was only interested in the best. Big offerings of heavy lambs in recent weeks have diverted quite an amount of competition from the lighter young wethers, and this has been reflected throughout the section. For the best of the ewes there was a very sound sale, and top quality, well-woolled lines looked to be fully 2s a head dearer. The general run of ewes, however, sold fully firm to a shade better on last week, and the sale at times tended to be slightly erratic, varying sharply with quality. The market was topped by G. Edgar Jones (Waiau), who sold 16 at 84s Id. 17 at 83s I'd. 15 at 79s Id. and 15 at 75s Id. A. D. Wyllle (Omihl) sold six at 81s id. and sales at 79s Id were made by N. W. Skurr (Oxford) and D. C. F. Mason (Hawarden).
Top sale of ewes was made by A C H. Weavers (Oxford) with 25 at 42s Id. A. Harding (Loburn) was next with 14 at 41s Id. 30 at 40s Id. and 26 at 39s Id Other sales at 39s Id were made by J. S. Though meeting a reasonably good sale, fat cattle generally tended to be slightly cheaper than last week. The offering totalled 369. compared with 318 at the last sale. While there was a proportion of top quality beef in the selection there was a good percentage of no more than average quality. Steers were distinctly easier apart from choice mediumweights. While choice quality held its own, other classes were cheaper by up to 50s a head. Heifers also tended to be slightly easier. There was some variation in opinion on the fat cow market. In the view of some these sold at about late rates, 'but others felt that they were also easier.

The dairy cattle section attracted about 35 head, more than half of which were Friesian cows of good quality. The market for these was fully up to late rates to a shade better. Best second, third and fourth calvers ranged from £55 to £65. with one extra good at £7l, medium made from £42 to £53 and others sold from £22 to £35.
There were not so many in the heifer market as at recent sales, but the market remained at about late levels. A few good Friesians in the yarding sold from £4B to £55 with two sales at £62 and £66. The balance were crossbreds and secondary sorts which made down to £27. VEALERB The veal yarding consisted of 150 to 160 head of very mixed quality, including a fairly high percentage of secondary quality. Compared with last week rates could be quoted from a par to up to 10s easier. FAT PIGS There was the biggest yarding of porkers for four or five years. It included a fair proportion of good quality sorts, but there was also a fairly large representation of medium and unfinished sorts. Seven and a half trucks came from the West Coast. Considering the size of the entry the sale could be described as a satisfactory one although values were easier by up to 10s a head, and tn some cases more. The chopper entry was a little larger, but last week’s easing was fully recovered. In the bacon section the entry was considerably larger and here again values showed an easing tendency and were 5s to 15s a head lower than last week.
Values were:— Light and unfinished porkers. £5 15s to £7 12s 6d. Medium porkers. £8 14s Bd to £9 4s Bd Heavy porkers. £9 9s Bd to £lO 4s Bd? Light baconers. £ll 2s Bd to £l2 2s Sd. Medium baconers. £l2 14s Bd to £l3 14s Bd Heavy baconers, £l3 17s Bd to £l4 9s Bd. Choppers. £8 Is to £l6 Is. STORE PIGS The store pig entry was again of medium size and consisted mainly of medium and small stores. The attendance of buyers was again small and values, if anything, were a shade easier. values were:— Small weaners. 38s to 465. Best weaners. 48s to 535. Slips. 60s to 68s. Small and medium stores. 70s to 90s. Large stores. £4 15s to £5 ss.
