REFUGEE POLICY

N.Z. Churches’ Criticism

The ultimate responsibility for New Zealand’s limited policy regarding the immigration and sponsoring of refugees rests not so much with a particular Government in power, but with the general attitude of complacency and selfishness among New Zealand citizens, according to a leading article in the New Zealand National Council of Churches’ latest bulletin.

"It is the conviction of the churches that more should have been done by this prosperous country than has been done. What has been done bv the Government is a conssderable achievement from some points of view but we do not think that is enough.” says the article.

There was, however, "one thing” which could be done by the members of churches throughout the Dominion. Congregations could be urged to continue applying for the sponsorship of refugee famines. It was now quite clear that the Government decision as to how many families would be admitted would depend. at least in part, on the number of potential sponsors already on official records.
