CRICKET TOUR
Presbyterian Attitude (N.Z Preus Association) DUNEDIN. May 2. The public questions committee of the Presbyterian Assembly will be asked to watch developments in connexion with the tour of South Africa by the New Zealand cricket team, and to take any necessary steps to make the church’s position clear. In view of the church's stand against racial discrimination at the time ot the recent All Black tour, the Dunedin Presbytery decided tonight to make thia request to the assembly's committee. The Very Rev. Dr. J. D. Salmond drew attention to press reports on South Africa. New Zealand bad accepted its position as part of a multiracial Commonwealth he said. Members of the Presbytery’s public questions committee felt the situation in South Africa could become more and more unrealistic, he said.
The Rev. A. C. McLean said that the cricket tour presented a different situation from the All Black tour when the Presbyterian Church had taken a stand against the exclusion of Maoris from the team, said his committee was concerned about the cricket tour because New Zealanders would only play all white teams in South Africa.
