MR HARRY RHODES
(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON. May 2. A pioneer settler of the Waikato, Mr Harry Rhodes, of Paerangi, has died, aged 93. Mr Rhodes was born at Pokeno and was the son of Mr Edward Rhodes, who came to New Zealand in 1839 After farming in Waikato, Poverty Bay, and Hawke's Bay. Mr Rhodes returned to Waikato in 1898 and took over a property of 1000 acres at Paterangi.
He married Miss Jessie Fisher, the eldest daughter of the Hon. John Fisher, M.L.C., of Cambridge. Mrs Rhodes died in 1940. Mr Rhodes was active in establishing the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company. Mr Rhodes is survived by one son and one daughter.
MR J. J. ARDAGH Mr John Joseph Ardagh, formerly well known as a dentist in Christchurch, died yesterday. He was 80. Mr Ardagh was born at Glenavy and attended the Waitaki Boys’ High School and later the University of Otago. He served in the Ist N.Z.E.F during World War I. A keen bridge player, he was a member for many years of the Crockford Bridge Club. He retired about 10 years ago, after practising in Christchurch all his life. Mr Ardagh is survived by his wife and tw-o daughters, Mrs M. T. Enright, of Christchurch. and Mrs R. P. Miers, of Palmerston North. MR J. G. KEITH Mr James George Keith, Sub-Colleetor of Customs tn Christchurch, died on Monday. He was 51. Mr Keith had been ill for several months. He joined the Customs Department in 1926, and served in Wellington and Greymouth before he came to Christchurch in 1937. Before he was appointed subcollector last year, Mr Keith was an examining officer. Mr Keith is survived by his wife and a daughter.
