Obituary Mr A. Sutherland, Former Member For Hauraki

HAMILTON, May 2. A long period of public service was ended today by the death of Mr Andrew Sinclair Sutherland, of Ngaruawahia, at the age of 74. Mr Sutherland held the Hauraki seat in Parliament for 12 years, from 1942 to 1954, when he retired. He was then Chief Government Whip, having held the position since 1949, when the National Party came to power. “I was deeply grieved to learn of the passing of Mr Sutherland." said the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) this evening. "Mr Sutherland was a very able member of the previous National Government, and as Senior Government Whip for six years he held the respect of all members of the House.
“His ability as a Parliamentarian stemmed from a long career in public life. He was a man of wide interests, and of great energy in working for the good of the community.
Andy Sutherland had been one of the most popular whips, and had given great service to the National Party, said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash). He paid tribute to Mr Sutherland’s work for primary production, especially for the dairy industry. Boer War Veteran When a youth, Mr Sutherland served in the Boer War. On his return he worked in Southland before coming to the Waikato in 1913, where he owned a mixed farm at Te Akatea, Glen Massey. For 10 years he was a member of the Rural Credits Board, and for 30 years a member of the Auckland Harbour Board, being chairman for a period. He was a member of the South Auck-
land Land Board, and a member of the Raglan Licensing Committee for many years.
He was a director of the Farmers’ Trading Company, Ltd., president of the Ngaruawahia Racing Club, a member of the executive of the Waikato Trotting Club, president of the South Auckland Rugby League, and a life member of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association.
Mr Sutherland was president of the South African War Veterans' Association, and at the time of his death was chairman of the provisional committee organising a new fertiliser company in Northland.
He was awarded the C.B.E. in 1955 in recognition of his public service. Mr Sutherland was married twice, but had no family.
