WAR AGAINST EELS
Protection Of Ducklings "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. May 2 About two dozen eels were taken from the Chelsea sugar refinery ponds by officials of the Waitemata Acclimatisation Society recently. They ranged from an "old man’’ eel weighing more than 101 b to youngsters a foot long. This was the first round in a war against the eels, which have been killing and eating ducklings hatched at the ponds “These ponds are breeding grounds for duck," said one of the society’s chief rangers, Mr E Buckley. “Not one duckling here reaches maturity They are all taken by the eels ’’ Mr T W D. Hughes, an honorary ranger, set 12 traps using a whole sheep as bait “We want to get the number of eels down to a level where they are no longer a nuisance,” he said “It will be a continuing job.” The trapping at Chelsea is a forerunner to action by the society against eels in Lake Pupuke. where thousands of fingerling trout have recently been liberated.
