Two N.Z. Prime Ministers An article bearing the headline "Ulsterman became Premier while building haystack” appeared recently in the “Ulster Commentary.” a publication issued by the Government of Northern Ireland. The magazine was reporting remarks made by the Acting High Commissioner for New Zealand (Mr G. R Laking) when he visited Belfast to open Commonwealth Week in the city.
Mr Laking had said that Ulster-born William Ferguson Massey was building a haystack on his farm in New Zealand when a telegram from the Governor-General asking him to form a government was passed up to him on the end of a hayfork. He was one of two Ulstermen who became Prime Ministers of New Zealand. The other was John Ballance. The article said Mr Laking afforded another “fascinating glimpse into history” when he said that the first constitution of New Zealand, granted in 1846, divided the country into two provinces, one of which was known as New Ulster.
