DELIVERY OF MAIL
Decentralisation Programme The postal delivery service in Christchurch is to be decentralised. Instead of nearly all mail being sorted in the Chief Post Office, a good deal of the work will be done at four sorting depots in post offices at Papanui. Beckenham, Aranui, and Sockburn The timing of the change depends on the completion of new offices at the last three places named. There is already some degree of decentralisation of mail deliveries, in that postmen operate from Papanut. Upoer Riccarton, and Hornby with mail sorted in Christchurch. There js also both sorting and delivery at New Brighton and Sumner. Under the new scheme, the postmen’s branch staffs at New Brighton, Upper Riccarton. and Hornby will be moved to the new sorting offices. “Mail for 89 postmen’s walks is now sorted in Christchurch." the Chief Postmaster (Mr C. J C Simpson) said yesterday. “This puts quite a strain on the sorters, especially when they are learning. The change will cut down the number of walks to a more manageable size. It will also incidentally, give up badlyneeded extra room in the Chief Post Office." At present. 60 walks originate from the Chief Post Office. ’8 from Papanui, six from Upper Riccarton. and five from Hornby. Under the new scheme there will be only about 30 walks from the chief office and 20 or so each from the other four.
