WOMAN RADIO OPERATOR
Gardening At Sea Life at sea is full of interest for Miss Perna Hetland, the radio operator of the freighter Mui Ann, which is expected to arrive at Lyttelton this week. Miss Hetland, who comes from Stavanger. Norway, has been at sea for 12 years.
The Mui Ann carries a crew of 38 Chinese, six Europeans . . . and Miss Hetland. She is the only female member of the crew.
Miss Hetland’s hobby is gardening, and she cultivates indoor pot plants and climbing plants in her cabin. The plants come from all over the world, the latest addition is a Christmas rose that was given to her by the Norwegian Consul at Shanghai. Before she went to sea Miss Hetland took a 10-month course at a radio school in Norway. She joined the Ditlev Simonsen Line, which runs passenger vessels between the United States and the Far East, and joined the crew of the Mui Ann last June.
Eight hours of Miss Het-j land’s day are spent in the! radio room. When she is off duty the installation is switched to automatic operation.
