RETIRED AFTER 47 YEARS
Union Company Executive "The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. May 1. Tlie general passenger manager of the Union Steam Ship Company (Mr R. E. Cadness) retired yesterday after 17 years’ service. Mr Cadness joined the staff in 1914, at Auckland and was away on war service overseas from 1915 to 1919 when he rejoined the Auckland branch. He became overseas passenger supervisor at Christchurch in 1938. passenger supervisor at Sydney in 1946. assistant to the general passenger manager at head office in 1947 and was appointed general passenger manager of the company in 1948. Mr Ciadness will be sue-.
ceeded by the assistant general passenger manager (Mr R. E. Pirani) who joined the company’s staff in 1925 at head office, Wellington. He was subsequently on the purser staff for several years, becoming purser of the Awatea.
In 1938 he was posted to the staff ashore on the overseas passenger side at Auckland, became passenger manager at Palmerston North in 1948. overseas passenger supervisor at the Wellington branch in 1952, branch manager. Gisborne, in 1953 and assistant general passenger: manager in 1959. 1
