Heathcote Rubbish Dump
Sir.—May I draw attention to the condition of the rubbish dump newly opened in Centaurus road? For residents living opposite in Eastern terrace this dump advertises its presence by an offensive odour. While I am not a Heathcote county ratepayer and therefore not able to share in the amenities provided by that body, I would point out that lam not anxious to share its smells, gratis though they be. T understand that the Health Department has interested itself in this problem, but results are wanted.—Yours, etc.. RHYS E. GRIFFITHS. April 23, 1961.
Sir,—May I complain about the offensive smell from the dump in Centaurus road? We have had to contend with it for some weeks and although the Health Department has been approached and has apparently had it pumped out into the Heathcote river over a week ago and disinfected, the smell is Still as strong as ever. One wonders, would the situation be corrected if it was a private dump?—Yours, etc., M. MCLAUGHLIN. April 23, 1961.
(Mr I. L. Hall, county engineer of the Heathcote County Council, said: “We received the first intimation of smells from this dump on April 24. the day after your correspondents' letters. The dump has been operated under close control, but since then our efforts to avoid any nuisance have been intensified. We are anxious that there should be no cause for complaint and the county health inspector is of the opinion that no nuisance exists. Our efforts will continue.”]
