Bus Concessions Sought For Ambulance Members

To investigate the whole basis of concessions to members of the association using buses, the general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell) is to meet officers of the Canterbury and Westland division of the St. John Ambulance Association.

At its meeting yesterday, the board had before it a request from the association for 15 free passes for members going on ambulance duty at a skating rink at Cashmere.

“This skating rink is owned by a commercial concern, and I would strongly oppose the suggestion that we should give free passes when only a small section of the community is benefiting," said Mr H. E. Denton. There was something wrong if the proprietors of the rink could not afford £2 Iss a year to pay the cost of ambulance men travelling there, said Mr N. R. Forbes. “I feel the association should approach them—-they’re the ones who should pay." Mr E. J. Bradshaw: We are quibbling about something

that is not really important. I think we should grant the request. Since ambulance men who attended Rugby matches paid their own fares, it seemed unfair that those attending the ice skating should receive a concession, said Mr J. Shankland, moving the motion that the matter be discussed with the association. “After all, the Rugby union is not too well off.” Mr Denton: Nor the jockey club.
