ABLE HANOVER’S SUCCESS
Stakes Won By Dam In 1952 Able Hanover followed in the footsteps of his dam, Qualified when he gained a decisive win in the Twelfth Manawatu Futurity Stakes at Awapuni on Saturday. In 1952 Qualified won the same race for Mrs K. Craig, of Auckland, who also races Able Hanover.
Qualified was a bay mare by Logan Derby from a good winner in Hilda Potts, by Jack Potts. Hilda Potts was also the dam of Hildadale, the dam of Blue Marlin, Rellek and Logan Hill. Able Hanover, a member of the team prepared at Frankton by J. Sanders, was a winner earlier in the season When he beat Early Wynn in a division of the Great Northern Stakes. Able Hanover is by Smokey Hanover, the sire also of the third horse. Southern Smoke, one of the most consistent of the northern two-year-olds. Southern Smoke is due at Addington this week. His trainer, G. L. Mitchell, is to settle in Canterbury. Russley Song, runner-up to Able Hanover, was having her first race start. She was purchased at the national yearling sales for 210 guineas
by the Riccarton trainer, J. S. Shaw, who was acting as agent for Mr W. Hosking. She was offered on behalf of Mrs C. A. Denton, of Yaldhurst.
Russley Song is a halfsister by Flying Song to Responsive and is closely related to Big Shot, an outstanding winner for Mr Hosking some years ago. Quarrie, which finished fourth, cost his Awapuni owner-trainer, J. Clark, 275 guineas at the 1960 yearling sales. He is a colt by Garrison Hanover from Great Chance and was bred at Edendale by C. C. Scott
