Obituary MR F. S. COCKS

Mr Frederic Sidney Cocks, who was well-known to the parishioners of the Church of St. Michael and All Angels, died in Christchurch yesterday. He was 84. Mr Cocks was the doorkeeper at St. Michael’s for 62 years, having been appointed by the then vicar, the Rev. A. W. Averill (later Archbishop Averill). For several years he was a vestryman and a server in the sanctuary. When he was younger he taught in the Sunday school. Mr Cocks, who was a cabinetmaker, presented the church with a carpenter's bench which is still used as a children’s altar. Mr Cocks was born in Christchurch, but later shifted to Auckland with his family. He returned with his father to found the firm of T. Cocks and Sons in 1900 He worked until he was 80 when he retired because of ill-health. Mr Cocks Is survived by his wife and two daughters. Mrs H. J. Cox and Miss V. J. Cocks.
