Speculation In South Africa

The next Anglican Bishop of Johannesburg may be an African, according to an article today in the "Sunday Tribune,” an Opposition United Party newspaper. He will be elected in solemn conclave on May 9 to succeed Bishop Ambrose Reeves, who resigned after being expelled by the Government following his criticism of apartheid. The newspaper said that many of the I.OOOjOOO African Anglicans—they outnumber white Anglican* by nearly two to one—were discussing the possibility that the new bishop may be the Rt. Rev. A. H. Zulu, assistant-Bishop of the Diocese of St. John. Umtala, Natal. The Dean of Johannesburg (the Very Rev. P. H. F. Barron) said tn reply to questions that "any clergyman of the Anglican Communion either in South Africa or overseas could become Bishop of Johannesburg.”
