Disturbances hi Texas
(N .Z P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) GALVESTON (Texas), May 1 Police turned out armed with riot guns and dogs and arrested 51 youths, bringing the total to nearly 800 in three days in Galveston today The city has been packed with thousands of people, many of them students, for the “splash days" festival which marks the start of the summer tourist and bathing season.
On the first night wild fighting started when youths smashed beer bottles on a pavement near a seawall. Hundreds were arrested that night and the next as the rioting continued. Police reinforcements were brought in from the neighbouring cities and counties.
Last night a shot was reported near a dance hall and a drive-in theatre, and a detachment of armed police moved in with dogs, arresting 50 boys and a girl. Unruly elements in the crowd soon quietened down, Associated Press said.
