Intermediate Schools (N.Z Press Aasoctation) AUCKLAND. May 1. Intermediate schools were in dire financial need, said Mr F D. Hay, secretary pt the Intermediate Schools' Federation before the Commission on Education today. He called for a revised system of incidental grants assessed to meet each school's local requirements.

He asked that water, heating and lighting bills be met completely by the respective education boards, that the incidental grant be covered and controlled by the cost-of-living index, and that where an intermediate school roll was falling capitatdon fees be worked out. not only on a

per capita basis, but also on the floor apace to be cleaned Mr Hay quoted examples which, he salif shewed that the present system did not provide sufficient money for the paying of important and legitimate expenses incurred in the daily running of an intermediate school

“Why should I have to go out on bottle drives on Satur. day afternoon to make more money to pay for water?” he asked. “It can be said that the school committees are forced to do the work of the Government in providing money for essential items and equipment,” Mr Hay said.
