WHENUAPAI CROWD
U.S. Singer Mobbed
(N.Z Press Association)
AUCKLAND, April 30. Connie Francis, an American popular vocalist, and her party of entertainers were mobbed at Whenuapal airport tonight. A crowd of about 3500 turned up to welcome them.
Customs and police were temporarily swept aside as about 200 teen-agers clambered over airport barriers and swarmed on to the tarmac.
Miss Francis and her party were held inside the aircraft until the tarmac was cleared.
When they went into the terminal building the double doors into the baggage room threatened to buret as crowds pushed. Enterprising youths climbed on to the roof. As the entertainment group departed for the city, airport officials said it was the biggest commotion at Whenuapai since the 1980 All Black Rugby team left for South Africa
