Increased Production For Year

WANGANUI, April 30. The volume of production of the printing industry at March, 1960, showed an increase of 12.8 per eent. over 1958- the greatest increase in production of any of the 20 groups into which such factory production was divided, said the president of the Federation of Master Printers of New Zealand (Mr R. E. Worts) at the federation’s annual conference. Only four other groups recorded a volume increase of more than 10 per cent., said Mr Worts, and the volume increase over all industry rose by only 4.4 per cent. According to the May, 1960, Abstract of Statistics, there were 276 establishments primarily engaged in commercial and job printing, including the activities of the Government Printing and Stationery Department. The industry employed 4664 persons; 3315 males and 1349 females. Salaries and wages paid during the year ended March. 1959, were £3.5 million. Materials used cost £3,8 million; the value of output was £9.6 million: and the value added to materials by process of manufacture was £5.9 niillion. Mr Worts said that the 1959- statistics for the pointing and publishing industry as a whole showed that at March. 1960, there were 10.832 persons employed in the industry in New Zealand. The value of the total output was £26.2 million and the added value was £16.7 million. During the previous
year 1.017 million man hours of overtime were worked; this was the first time more than one million hours of overtime had been worked in the industry, and was an increase of 14 J per cent, over the previous year. Mr Worts said that the value of production and the added value of the combined paper, paper products, and printing and publishing industries were £57.4 million and £33.5 million respectively. For the second year in succession this made these five industries third to the food and transport equipment industries in total value, and second only to the food industry in added value, he said.
