THE “SKIMMER,” the first privately-constructed hovercraft, which has been built by students of the College of Aeronautical and Automobile Engineering, Redhill, Surrey, in their spare time for £70. The designer, Mr R. Robertson, a war-time test pilot, is seated on the machine as it is carried out of a hangar at Redhill aerodrome by the students for a demonstration. It weighs 250lb and is only lift 6in long, but it can lift five men. The engine used was an auxiliary from a sailing catamaran.
