FIRST CENSUS RETURNS
Weather Islands’ Staffs
Campbell Island and the Kemiadec Islands were the first districts to return their census results to the Government Statistician: but the task of the enumerators on the islands was simple. There are nine technicians manning a meteorological and aeradio station on Campbell Island and 10 on the Ker. tnadecs. Otherwise the islands are uninhabited. The first results from New Zealand’s mainland were for the Arrowtown borough, the Eketahuna Borough, the Mauriceville County and the Murchison County. Each return showed a drop on the 1956 census figures Returns were: Arrowtown, 171 (186 in 1956): Eketahuna 772 (774); Mauriceville county, 514 (546): Murchison. 1448 <14721.
